Wudang Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial arts technique, which is said to have been created by Zhang Sanfeng, the founder of the Yuan and Ming dynasties, by integrating the essence of the Book of Changes and the Tao Te Ching. It aims at health preservation and also serves as a martial art. The following is a detailed introduction to Wudang Tai Chi:

1. Theoretical basis and characteristics

Theoretical Basis: The theoretical system of Wudang Tai Chi Chuan centers around the concepts of "Tao follows nature" and "unity of heaven and man", encompassing three main disciplines: Tai Chi Chuan, Xingyi Quan, and Bagua Zhang, and forming unique practices such as "holding the primordial energy and maintaining unity".

Characteristics: Wudang Tai Chi emphasizes using stillness to counteract movement, softness to overcome hardness, and employing a gentle touch to overpower a heavy opponent. Its movements are gentle and slow, with the effects of relaxing muscles and activating meridians, nourishing the blood and regulating qi, nourishing the five organs, and cultivating the mind and body.

II. History and Heritage

Origin: Wudang Tai Chi originated from Mount Wudang, and it is said to have been created by Zhang Sanfeng. However, there is controversy over the origin of this martial art. Wang Zongyue's "Tai Chi Chuan Manual" from the Ming Dynasty first explicitly refers to the term "Tai Chi Chuan," while Zhang Sanfeng lived in an era when this name did not exist.

Inheritance: Wudang Taijiquan has been secretly passed down on Wudang Mountain for a long time, with strict rules and regulations, making its true form rarely seen by outsiders. Its reappearance at martial arts exhibitions in the 1980s attracted attention, but the lineage of inheritance has not been fully verified. Influenced by the Taoist concept of "secret and single transmission", its dissemination range is limited, and the existing practitioners are elderly and scattered. Urgent efforts are needed to sort out the theory and carry out rescue and protection.

III. Fist Techniques and Routines

Fist Technique: Wudang Tai Chi Chuan encompasses 36 hand techniques and 48 footwork patterns, including Yin-Yang Shou Dan Shou (a technique that balances Yin and Yang and guards the elixir) and Wu Ji Bu (a technique that signifies the infinite or boundless). It emphasizes the coordination between the waist and hips, as well as the flow of qi and strength.

Forms: There are various forms of Wudang Tai Chi, such as the Wudang Tai Chi Thirteen Forms, the Wudang Tai Chi One Hundred and Eight Forms, and the Wudang Tai Chi Twenty-Eight Forms created by Daoist Zhong Yunlong, the fourteenth-generation successor of the Wudang Sanfeng School. These forms each have their unique characteristics, retaining the philosophical core and practical features of the ancient Taoist boxing techniques while also being easy to promote and disseminate.
